Boards certified to UL 2272 have passed electrical and fire-safety testing of the complete product, which addressed the battery fires reported around 2015–2016. Buy a certified board from an established seller, respect the weight limit, charge with the supplied charger on a hard surface, and wear a helmet. Certification reduces risk; it does not remove it.
Look for the certification mark on the packaging and the holographic label on the underside of the board, and ask the seller for the certificate. A UL-listed battery or charger alone does not make the whole board compliant. If the price is far below similar boards, be suspicious.
6.5-inch solid wheels suit smooth floors and clean pavement. 8.5-inch tires add enough clearance for cracks, short grass and packed dirt. 10-inch air-filled tires are the most comfortable on rough ground but need occasional inflation and make the board heavier.
Manufacturers usually state a minimum age of 8 and a minimum rider weight of around 44 lb; some kids’ models are sold for ages 5 and up with a lower speed cap. Age alone is not a safety guarantee: rider weight, balance, supervision and protective gear matter just as much.
Advertised ranges run from about 3 to 13 miles depending on the model. Expect less than the figure on the box: rider weight, hills, speed, temperature and tire pressure all reduce range.
Yes. Look for a weight rating comfortably above your own: 8.5-inch boards are often rated around 220–265 lb and some 10-inch boards up to 420 lb. Bigger tires also make the ride steadier for taller riders.
